Walcott 5th in Paris

Keshorn Walcott finished fifth at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Paris, France, yesterday. Competing for the first time since bagging Olympic men's javelin bronze, in Brazil two Saturdays ago, the Trinidad and Tobago field athlete threw 82.40 metres.

Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch was the class of the Paris field, producing a personal best 88.02m effort to claim the title, ahead of Germany's Julian Weber, the silver medallist at 87.39m. Third spot went to another German, newly-crowned Olympic champion Thomas Rohler (84.16m).

Ukraine's Dmytro Kosynskyy was the early leader in the 10-man competition, opening at 80.86m and improving to 84.08m in round two. But he slipped to fourth in round three and stayed there till the end. Kosynskyy's best throw on the day was the 84.08m personal best.

After fouling in round one, Walcott got up to 81.82m in the second round, good enough for third spot. Though his round three effort was better, 82.40m, the Toco thrower could not hold on to a top-four position, missing out on the opportunity for three additional attempts.

At the Rio 2016 Olympics, Walcott threw 85.38m in the men's javelin final. The bronze was T&T's only medal at the Games.

Walcott is just 23, but already has an impressive throwing résumé. In addition to his 2012 Olympic Games triumph in London, England, he was crowned world junior champion that same year. Walcott captured Commonwealth Games silver and Continental Cup bronze in 2014. And last year, in Toronto, Canada, he was crowned Pan American Games champion.
